What Causes Bed Bugs?

Anyone would get goosebumps if they discovered bed bugs had infested their home. These pests are known for infiltrating homes, quickly multiplying their presence, and generating a severe infestation.

When bed bugs settle in and around your bed, they rely on you to keep them alive. That’s right: bed bugs penetrate your skin and feast on your blood while you sleep. Isn’t that dreadful?

It can be a nightmare while dealing with a bed bug infestation in Estero, FL. Prevention is the best course of action. Even if you’ve already discovered a bed bug, you can take steps for bed bug treatment in Estero, FL, and keep them away from returning.

Let’s look at what causes bed bugs, how to identify if you have them, and practical methods of bed bug treatment to avoid and remove bed bugs in FL.

What Causes Bed Bugs?

Bed bugs are microscopic, oval-shaped pests that feed on human and other mammals’ blood. They live primarily on blood and must eat at least once every 14 days to breed, but they can feed more frequently if necessary.

An infestation can begin with the presence of a single female bed bug. A female bed bug can deposit 2 to 5 eggs per day and up to 500 in her lifespan. A single bed bug can multiply into hundreds in weeks if left unchecked.

One of the most frequently asked questions is ‘What causes bed bugs?’ Unfortunately, the answer isn’t so simple. Bed bugs evolved in developing African and Middle Eastern countries.

With international tourists, they started migrating to developed countries such as the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Bed bugs do not transmit disease, and they do not pose a significant risk to the health of animals or humans aside from creating itchy, sometimes painful bite marks.

An infestation of bed bugs is produced by the bugs spreading from one location to another. Bed bugs can attach themselves to you or your clothing to move from one place to another.

Contrary to popular belief, bed bugs do not appear to be infectious. However, the most common causes of a bed bug infestation are unintentional and random.

They are typically carried into the home by contaminated goods such as furniture, bags, clothing, purses, and backpacks. Infected animals, like bats or birds, might also bring them into the house in Lee County.

Once a footing has been formed, an infestation can swiftly move into other home areas or structures through walls, floorboards, and doorways.

Apartments, dorm rooms, hotels, cruise ships, trains and buses, and shelters or camps are examples of bed bug hotspots. They can also effortlessly transition from one location to the other. Sadly, living in a highly inhabited building or even staying in a packed neighborhood for an extended period can raise the danger of an infestation.

Once bed bugs have latched themselves to your luggage and gotten at your hotel or house, they can migrate to whatever little, dark crevice they can discover.

They do not have nests, but they prefer to reside in groups, particularly inside mattresses, box springs, bed frames, and headboards.

In other words, bed bugs like to live in areas where they may easily feed on humans. Though they wish to stay near the bed, these pests will travel up to 20 feet to feast on a host.

How to Avoid A Bed Bug Infection?

You can take steps to avoid bed bug bites in the first place. When you’re at home, keep it clean. Wash your bedsheets once a week and dry them on high heat in the dryer or under the sun. Keep areas clean and clutter-free by vacuuming regularly in Lee County.

Before sleeping on the bed while traveling, use a flashlight to inspect the bottom seams and folds; you’ll have no trouble seeing these tiny insects. Also, avoid putting your bag on furniture or where the wall meets the floor.

Finally, you should make efforts to eliminate the bed bugs in FL. Depending on the outbreak’s severity, you may consider contacting an insect control professional business-like STAT Pest Control in Estero, FL for effective bed bug treatment.

Some information about Estero, FL

Estero is a village in Lee County, Florida, United States. As of the 2010 census, at which time Estero was an unincorporated community, or census-designated place, the population was 22,612. In 2019, the village’s estimated population was 33,871. It is part of the Cape Coral-Fort Myers, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Mound Key, located in Estero Bay, is believed to have been the ceremonial center of the Calusa Indians when they were encountered by the Spanish in the early 1500s. German homesteader Gustave Damkohler began planting mulberry trees in 1882 along the Estero River, followed by others who established fish camps and the region’s first citrus groves. In 1894, Damkohler donated property to the followers of Cyrus Teed, who proposed a theory that people live on the inside of the Earth’s outer skin, and that celestial bodies are all contained inside the hollow Earth. This theory, which he called Koreshan Unity, drew followers to occupy and develop Damkohler’s original 320-acre (1.3 km2) tract. They were business-oriented and lived communally, prospering enough to found their own political party (‘The Progressive Liberty Party’) and incorporate the town on September 1, 1904, as Estero. At the behest of other local officials, the Florida legislature abolished the municipality of Estero in 1907.

The 1908 death of Teed (who claimed to be immortal) was a critical blow to the group’s faith, whose membership dwindled into the 1960s. The foundation remains as ‘The College of Life Foundation’, which contributed (for example) at least $25,000 to the Gulf Shore Playhouse in or around 2007. The Koreshans’ original tract is now owned by Florida as the Koreshan State Historic Site.

Access to Estero was greatly improved in the 1920s when the Tamiami Trail, a highway linking Tampa and Miami, and two railroads were built through the area. The Tamiami Trail was fully complete in 1928. The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (via its Fort Myers Southern Railroad subsidiary) began service through Estero in 1925. A competing railroad, the Seaboard Air Line Railroad (via its Seaboard-All Florida Railway subsidiary) also began service through Estero in 1927. Today, the former Atlantic Coast Line tracks are still in place east of US 41 and have been owned by Seminole Gulf Railway since 1987. The former Seaboard tracks were removed in the 1940s and its former route west of US 41 is now an FPL power line corridor.
